Why We Never Cover Over Existing Wood Fascia and Soffits
One question we occasionally get asked when visiting homes across South Wales is whether we can simply fit new fascia boards over the existing wood rather than removing everything completely.
It is a perfectly understandable question because from the ground old fascia boards can sometimes look reasonably sound. Paint may be peeling slightly, guttering might have started leaking in places, or timber may look tired, but people often say to us that it “doesn’t look too bad.” The reality is that roofline problems very often start in places homeowners simply cannot see.
At Mac Roofline, covering over existing timber fascia boards is something we have never done, and it is not something we ever intend to do. Since starting back in 1998, we have always believed roofline replacement should be carried out properly from the beginning because over nearly 28 years, we have seen what happens when old timber is left in place and simply covered rather than removed.
Fascia Boards And Soffits
Over the years, we have removed thousands of fascia boards, soffits and gutter systems across Cardiff, Newport, Caerphilly, Bridgend, Chepstow and throughout South Wales.
One thing experience teaches you very quickly is that appearances can be misleading. Quite often, we arrive at properties where customers think they need a simple tidy-up or believe covering over the existing wood may be sufficient.
Then we remove the old roofline and find timber deterioration that simply could not have been seen without this removal.

We regularly uncover timber affected by years of moisture, older repairs sitting on top of previous repairs, weakened fixing points, hidden deterioration and areas where water has slowly been causing damage for much longer than anyone realised.
The homeowner has usually had absolutely no way of knowing because externally, everything looked reasonably acceptable. That is exactly why our process has never changed.
Roofline Replacement
When we carry out a full roofline replacement, safety always comes first. Proper scaffolding is erected to allow safe access to the roofline.
Fascia and Soffit Replacement
We believe that if work is worth doing properly, then it should also be carried out safely and correctly from the beginning. Fascia and soffit replacement is not simply a case of putting a ladder up against a property and attaching new boards over old timber. Proper access allows work to be completed carefully, safely and to the standard we expect.
Removal Phase

Once scaffolding is in place, existing guttering is removed carefully first. Removing guttering fully exposes the fascia board and allows us to begin taking the existing roofline away properly. Existing fascia boards are removed completely rather than covered. Existing soffits are removed. Older fixings are taken away, and everything is stripped back so we can properly inspect what sits underneath.
Inspection Phase
That inspection stage is one of the most important parts of the entire installation. Until old materials come away properly, nobody truly knows what sits behind them.
- We inspect rafter feet carefully, because fascias protect exposed rafter feet and the ends of the roof rafters from moisture and rot.
- We assess timber condition thoroughly.
- We look for signs such as rot, sagging soffit panels, peeling paint, and gaps that could let pests into the roof space.
If any areas require attention, that can be dealt with before installation begins rather than hidden underneath new materials. We believe homeowners deserve to know that what sits underneath their new roofline is every bit as good as what can be seen externally.
Roofline is not there simply to make a house look smarter.
- Fascias are the vertical straight boards fixed along the roofline where the roof meets the outer walls, supporting the gutters and giving the edge of the roof a finished appearance.
- Soffits matter because soffits are horizontal panels fitted beneath the eaves, shielding the underside from weather and pests while helping attic ventilation.
- Ventilation matters because soffits often include ventilation slots or vents that let air into the loft, providing adequate ventilation to help prevent damp, condensation and timber rot while supporting airflow through the roof area.
- Water management matters.
Together, fascias and soffits help protect structural timber from weather damage while also improving kerb appeal, and everything works together as one complete roofline system. Because of that, we have always believed it should be treated properly rather than covered over. Regular inspection and maintenance help maintain performance and avoid more extensive repairs.
Installation Process
Once everything underneath has been inspected and checked thoroughly, we begin installing full replacement fascia boards. At Mac Roofline, we install full replacement boards because they provide proper long-term support for guttering systems rather than relying on old timber hidden underneath thinner cover boards, and full replacement is often a cost-effective solution when wooden fascias have already suffered weathering and are vulnerable to rot.
- Measurements are taken carefully throughout installation, and boards are cut accurately to ensure a professional finish.
- Existing fixings are removed properly, and where sections need careful cutting back, that is carried out methodically before installation progresses.
Roofline installation is not simply attaching boards to a property. Preparation matters. Accuracy matters. Attention to detail matters. Regular maintenance helps prolong lifespan, with wooden sections often lasting around 15 to 20 years, while UPVc fascias can exceed 25 years with proper care, thanks to their strong weather resistance.

Replacing Soffits
New soffits are fitted carefully to provide clean finishing underneath the roofline, and where appropriate, we install over fascia ventilation because airflow into roof spaces matters more than many people realise. Many older properties across South Wales were simply not built with modern roof ventilation considerations, and ensuring roof spaces perform properly forms an important part of carrying out roofline replacement correctly.
We also install eaves protection where required to help direct rainwater correctly into gutter systems. Homeowners often never physically see those details once work is complete, but after nearly 28 years of carrying out roofline replacement work, we know small details make a very big difference over time.
- Correct bracket positioning matters.
- Guttering alignment matters.
- Falls on gutter systems matter.
- Finishing details matter.
It is often the parts customers never physically see once installation is complete that make the biggest difference years later.
The truth is, carrying out roofline replacement properly takes more work, more time and more attention to detail. There is no easy shortcut around that, and there never has been. Removing existing roofline properly, erecting scaffolding to create safe access, stripping everything back fully, checking what sits underneath and then rebuilding the roofline correctly is the longer route. We know that. We have always known that.
Over the years, we have replaced many installations where timber had previously been covered rather than removed. Customers often tell us they believed everything underneath was perfectly fine because externally, everything still looked tidy.
Unfortunately, roofline problems often start where homeowners cannot see them, and by the time issues become visible externally, deterioration underneath may have been developing for years.
That is one of the reasons our installation methods have remained exactly the same since Mac Roofline first started back in 1998. We remove properly because we want to know exactly what sits underneath before installing anything new. We inspect properly because homeowners deserve confidence that hidden problems are not simply being covered over. We replace properly because the roofline protects homes every day, and we believe customers deserve work carried out to a standard we would expect on our own properties.
Could quicker methods be used? Of course, they could. Could old timber simply be covered in many situations? Possibly. But after nearly 28 years working on homes throughout South Wales, we know what lasts, and we know what creates problems further down the line. That experience is one of the reasons Mac Roofline still approaches roofline replacement exactly the same way today as when we first started- and jobs that we did 28 years ago are still going strong!
When customers choose Mac Roofline, they are not simply paying for new fascia boards, soffits and guttering. They are investing in experience, careful installation methods and a company that still believes standards matter. Protecting homes properly has always mattered more to us than finding easier routes, and that way of thinking helped build Mac Roofline nearly 28 years ago. It still drives how we work today, and it always will.
